LLM at KCL

Here's my two cents regarding the current topics:

Agreement: I paid my deposit today (the office was open in spite of the bank holiday, hooray) and posted the signed agreements. The guy on the phone reassured me again that once the money is there, the place is secure even if the documents arrive late. So no need to worry anymore (I hope).

Food: I am definitely gonna be cooking most of the time, hence the meals will be considerably less than 10 pounds. When I say "cooking", I mean heating pasta and a jar of ready-made sauce from the supermarket, though. I'm not such a great cook. :) But eating out is just too expensive for me. I calculate with 30-40 pounds a week for grocery shopping.

Iron: I am not bringing one, it's too heavy. I am hoping some English student will let me borrow theirs or there will be one to use at the launderette (which was the case the last time I lived in a residence).

Transport: A monthly student ticket for zones 1 and 2 of Tube and bus costs 65 pounds. That's much cheaper than buying daily or weekly tickets. The only bummer is that we'll have to wait for our student ID before we can get those tickets. So the first ticket I buy when I get there will be a regular weekly one, which is cheaper than daily tickets. It's definitely gonna take more than a week for us to get the student ticket application (which has to be filled in at the student union's office) done. Oh, and the lucky people at Stamford and Great Dover Streets probably don't need Travelcards at all, do they?

From the airport: Since I'll have A LOT of luggage and VERY LITTLE money (not a good combination), I'll get the Heathrow Express to Paddington station and then a black cab to Hampstead. That's at least a little cheaper than taking a cab all the way and hopefully still manageable with all my suitcases.

Indian Food: Since there are so many great Indian places in London (at least in European eyes...), I think it's possible to get a decent Indian meal for under 10 pounds, too.

Phew. That was all I could think of. Oh no, one more thing: I also got my confirmation for the mini orientation at the Strand on the 15th. Liza, do you wanna travel there together from Hampstead on Monday morning?

@Ujjwala: well u can get insurance from India as well. i am going for Reliance General Insurance.. i will get it done in a day or two..give a call to any reliance insurance executive and they will get the work done in max 2 hours... they will explain u everything in detail..
Regarding Iron. i am planning to carry one with me, its light weight..

Important tip: if possible try to get "International Student travel Card" or "International Youth Travel Card:.. search for these terms on net and u will find what these are.. u get a hell lot of discounts once u have these.. i have ISTC... in india it costs only 250 bucks.. worth more then its price.. i will suggest u to get one..

Indian Food: for initial 10-15 days i am planning to take with me ready to cook food packets.. wont weight much.. so wont be a issue carrying them..i am also planning to learn little bit of cooking now...

and regardingn orientation i have earlier registered myself for 10-12sep orientation .. but since my flight is on 13th now; i have received confirmation for 15th.. so liza and cat will catch u on 15th..

@Cat: yup stamford people will save some money and time on travelling but at the same time paying high price for the apartments...

@Ujjwala: Lots of time in that case. But the last minute stuff is really a killer, so start packing your bags. :)))) I'm not taking an iron with me. My residence does have ironing boards so I'll just buy an iron over there. I wonder when they'll come out with cheap "crush free" shirts/ pants which don't need ironing. LOL.

@Liza: I think I'll be okay. My childhood friend is in London and he did his masters in London some years back. Now he's doing a PHD so I'm sure he knows all the cheap food joints in London and also the party places. I'll probably use the pay-as-you-eat refectory near Wolfson House. Might work out cheaper. Alcohol is expensive in the pubs/ clubs. Better to buy something from the shop and sit with friends in the hostel. :) I'll probably survive on those ready to eat things for some time. LOL.

@Cat: I also spoke to the residence people at Wolfson House today. They told me the same thing. So long as the deposit has been paid, my place is secure. Plus I can carry the NHS documents with me and submit them when I reach London, so that's another headache which is over. I'll also be able to collect my copy of the residence agreement when I reach London.

People at Great Dover Street probably will need travel cards because it's not so close to the Strand campus. I'll walk down from Wolfson House to Strand. Apparently it's a nice scenic walk along the river. :)

I'll also try and take the Heathrow Express. If I'm lucky my friend will come to the airport.

    Hi everyone,

I'm coming to London on 8th September in the evening (hmm just wondering if there would be anyone else in London that early?)...was planning on attending the orientation scheduled for 10-12 Sept. but obviously won't be able to do so...and hoping now for the event on 15th.

Still no enrollment pack...and most probably by the time it arrives I'll be already in London...anyway...seems it's not that crucial anyway.

By the way, does anyone have any idea on when are we supposed to get the invoice for paying the tuition fee?

Congratulations for all of you that have successfully arranged the accommodation issue!

The idea of a meeting on 14th or 15th sounds really good!

Good luck to all of you in your last preparations and looking forward to meeting you soon (in about a fortnight or less)! ;-)

    Cheers,
    Vlad

    @ Vlad

Last year the invoice was issued sometime around mid October. They were required to pay the fees in 2 weeks of the invoice being issued or October 31st whichever was earlier.

If you plan to attend the orientation on 15th at Strand make sure that you send a mail to [email protected] telling them that you wish to attend the same

    Thanks!

I emailed them last night.....but I guess it will take some time for them to answer me....

@ Vlad: I only emailed them on Saturday and had a reply by Monday, so they seem to be really quick in getting back to people. Sorry if you already told us and I missed it, but which accommodation did you get?

    @ Cathrin

Reading the previous posts - it seemed that it takes longer to get a reply...but in your case - 2 days...sounds great! ;-)

About the accommodation - unfortunately, I didn't get one. Or rather, I was offered one of the Intercollegiate residences but I decided to decline that offer. Currently, I'm on the waiting list of KCL but I doubt it that there are any rooms left.

So...that's the main reason for me going to London that early. Initially, I'll be staying with a friend of mine and in the meantime will be looking around for private accommodation. Hopefully, I'll be lucky enough to find something relatively nice, with a relatively convenient location and relatively affordable. ;-)

All the best on the accomodation search.
