    Hi Adi!

My friends call me Cat indeed. ;)

I don't think you need the Direct Debit Mandate if you intend to pay for your accommodation differently, i. e. by cheque. Direct Debit is just the most convenient option for King's (as it ensures them getting their money on time), therefore they're trying to convince everyone to use it.

Regarding the NHS I still don't know what I'm gonna do. I know we're gonna receive our NHS card by mail, and if they don't have the complete address (no room number), it might get lost?

    Hi

I finally managed to find time to fill in the Residence Agreement. I'm only sending the Residence Agreement to London. I'm not going to pay through the Direct Debit Mandate so won't send back that form. Cathrin is right, the Direct Debit is only if you want the college to get the fees directly through your bank account in London. Since I don't have an account as yet in London, no point in sending the Direct Debit form and in any case I'd rather pay by cheque/ draft.

I'll also collect my copy of the agreement from the Residence. I'll send the self addressed envelope without stamps and like Cathrin ask them if I can collect my signed copy of the agreement in London itself since I'll be in London much before it can reach me in Delhi.

As for the NHS stuff I think I'll send it across just to save some time once I reach London. It'll be one thing off my list if I send it now. LOL.

@Aditya: Will courier my stuff on Monday or Tuesday latest.

@Ujjwala: Just pay your 150 pounds and don't worry. When are you reaching London? There's still enough time for you to receive, sign and send back your residence contract.

@Cathrin: A get together is a great idea. I'll try and find out a suitable place to meet up in London. Will ask my friends in London. The date can be confirmed by everyone later. Hopefully I'll have access to the Wolfson House internet during my 4 days stay as a guest. :))

@ Everyone.. finally posted my Accommodation Agreement.. hope it reaches on time now.

    Now few important queries.
    1. Do we need to any converter or something for electronic device usage like laptops, irons etc. because in England as i have heard the voltage is 110 where as in Indian subcontinent its 220..
    2. How much cash one is recommended to carry for initial 10-15 days..apart from travelers cheque.
    3. is it better to get insurance before leaving for London.

if some one can elaborate on this.. will be really helpful.

I got an acknowledgement for my registration in the mini orientation happening in Strand. Did you also get one?

    @ Aditya

    1. The voltage in UK is 220, same as in India, so you wouldnt need a convertor.

2.The pins are different though, square and not round like in India. So you would need multiplugs with square pins.

    3. You would need approximately 500-700 pounds in cash till you open a bank account. This will be in addition to the travellers cheques you have.

The initial cab fare from heathrow to stamford would be about 80 pounds.
The prepaid sim would cost you another 30 pounds.
Food expenses will be approximately 10 pounds per meal.
Daily unlimited travel passes for zone 1-2 would cost 5.3 pounds.

Make sure that you get the denominations preferably in 20's coz it is very difficult to get change for the bigger denominations especially in cabs.

    4. Health insurance is being provided by the college, but this will start only after the enrolment. So if you want you can take an international health cover from a reputed insurance agency for a month. ICICI has got a Globetrotter Overseas Individual Student Insurance Policy which fits the bill.

@Liza: 10 pounds per meal sounds very expensive. Hope it's not that much. Otherwise the monthly cost for food itself will become at least 600 pounds assuming one has 2 meals a day. :) I better learn how to cook. LOL.

Hey LIza! I did get a confirmation from them finally!:) For the orientation in Strand so I will be attending that! Did you get your residence a pack? Am still waiting for mine!:( Thanks a tonz for the info you gave Sanghi. It cleared a couple of doubts! I just wanted to know whether this insurance can be arranged for in less than two weeks? What all should I ask for in the insurance? I think theres so much left to do with so little time!!!!!

Prashant- Im arriving on the 13th so I do have some time in my hand! Still waiting for my pack!:)

This is a general question guys, I mean Liza, Prashant or Sanghi, are you all taking irons with you? Or willl the laundrette have an ironing board?

    @ Prashant

10 pounds would be only in the beginning, that is initially you wouldnt know which restaurants are cheaper and affordable. So you would end up spending some money, but once you get used to the place you would fare better.

Having said that I would put in a disclaimer : It can go above 10 pounds if you decide to go for wine/alcohol or Indian food.

So learning cooking is not actually a bad idea.................I am planning to do some fair amount of cooking.

Conclusion : London is "EXPENSIVE" ........have no misconceptions on that .best is to figure a way around it.

    @ Ujjwala

I haven't got the residence pack as of yet, but then its a holiday here today.....so hoping to get it tomorrow.

I think arranging for the insurance wouldnt be a problem, and the best part is you dont have to be in the country to get it done. Your family can follow up on it. I got my insurance done by my family back in India even though I was here in the US.

As to what all is to be covered under the insurance plan.......luggage, health etc. i will forward you the policy I have taken. have a look at it and deicde.

I am planning to take an iron with me. As to whether your residence will have an ironing board, I wouldnt know, differs from residence to residence. But then worst case you can always use the table top as an ironing board.
