Sep 03 2008, 06:26 AM@ Everyone: I just read on www.thestudentroom.co.uk, that people are applying for their Travelcards already (you can do it online). They use their student ID from the top of their enrolment form that has been sent to them. So there are people who have the mysterious enrolment pack already!!! But my point is this: They say the ID starts with "08", just as our reference numbers we've been using all along. Chances are that these reference numbers will be our student IDs, too, right? So do you think we could apply for student Travelcards now? Or is that too risky, in case they are not identical? Besides, we don't have our complete addresses (room numbers) yet... I just remember the last time I applied for one - and it took nearly four weeks before I had it, so I spent a lot of unneccessary money on travel, which I'd like to avoid this time!
EDIT: Nevermind. It says the student ID has 7 digits and our numbers have 8. So they're not the same. Darn.[Edited Sep 03 2008]

Sep 03 2008, 08:09 AMThnx Cat. for the detailed reply. regarding Chest Xray, i guess its not necessary for European students but for asian students the immigration officer may ask for it. so its better to have one rather then sitting on the airport and waiting for dr. to do it.

Sep 03 2008, 08:11 AM@Aditya and everyone: The chest X Ray is essential for students reaching the airport. Carry one with you in your hand baggage. Otherwise when you reach London airport, you'll have to get it done at the airport. They won't let you enter London without the chest X Ray and getting it done at the London airport will take a very long time. It'll waste 2 hours of yours at the London airport because of the long queues. So get it done in India before you take your flight. All my friends in London have told me not to reach the airport without a chest X Ray. My cousin reached London on 22nd August and the first thing he told me was to bring a chest X Ray.
Regarding the Meningitis C and MMR, you can either get it done in India or reach London and get it done there through the NHS. From what I've heard you can't take both the vaccinations at the same time and there has to be a time gap. I've also heard that the vaccinations give you fever, so maybe it's better to get them done in London itself. I've already had Meningitis (not sure if it was C though) and also all three of the MMR group as a child, so hopefully I'm also immune like Cathrin. Will have to check on that.
@Cathrin: It doesn't say anything about the chest X Ray on the form, but bring one with you to be on the safe side and save time at the airport. I'm not sure whether EU citizens need it or not.

Sep 03 2008, 08:24 AM@ Prashant: I am 99.9% sure European students do not need the x-ray. I have been to London more than 20 times and I've never had to show one. To be honest, I find it pretty strange that others have to have one. What do they do if something shows up on the film? Send you back home? Weird. But then I've revently been through U.S. border control and compared to that the U.K. one is laughable... :)

Sep 03 2008, 08:24 PM@Cathrin: You're lucky if you don't need it. It's quite strange to be asked for one. And what happens if between getting the chest X Ray and my flight I develop something which doesn't show on the chest X Ray. I'll wait till the last minute before getting the X Ray. LOL.
@Aditya: I still haven't decided. Will probably take it from SBI because my bank account is there and they can debit my account directly. But SBI does not issue travellers cheques so not sure where to get those from. As far as I know a receipt should be enough. But I'll also need to check up on this point. Haven't had much time to do all this. Will do it tomorrow and day after.

Sep 04 2008, 06:12 AM@Aditya: I checked with SBI and their currency rate is slightly higher than another money changer I spoke to. You can check out http://www.vkcforex.com/homepage1/forex/fx.asp but the website rate for the pound is more than what they'll give you over the phone. So call them up to check the rates.
I'll probably get the cash amount from the money changer and the draft from SBI. SBI rate for today was 1 pound = Rs. 80.12 and the money changers rate was 1 pound = Rs. 79.42.

I have been offered an accommodation at Stamford Street Apartments but am yet to receive my unconditional offer letter / contract. Who all haven't got it till now?
Can someone pls tell me the difference between a catered and a self catered accommodation? I have applied for a self-catered one. What all is provided in it and what all do we need to bring along with us?
Thanks friends...
