Aug 13 2008, 09:12 AMHi! I am bringing my laptop, too, as there's free wireless internet at the accommodation... I don't think I'll bring it to uni, though.
@ Anisha: I am thinking abot taking international arbitration, too. I might also go for civil and public litigation (procedure) as I'm hoping to work in litigation in the UK or the US after the LL.M.

Aug 13 2008, 10:38 AMHi Anisha
Don't worry, I've been scaring myself too for the past 6 months. hahaha. Since you've decided to go just enjoy your life and take things as they come. Don't agonize too much about the loan. You have the rest of your life to work and you'll be able to pay it off one way or the other even if initially it's a struggle. :)
I haven't heard anything about the pick up from the airport by King's. But it's possible one of my friends will come and pick me up at the airport.

Aug 13 2008, 11:08 AMOk all u ppl who proudly hold ur offer letters, please tell me one thing, If they've received my acceptance only yesterday, how long will it be before I get my offer letter? 1week? 10 days? More!!! :0

Aug 13 2008, 11:58 AM@Anisha: to be honest if college has received ur acceptance yesterday only then chances are that u will receive the offer letter in 15-20 days from today.. but that too not sure.. reason being college use regular mail to send offer letter. and until u have offer letter u will not be able to apply for visa.. so in all u will have only 10-12 days to manage things.
Regarding accommodation u can get some pvt. accommodation like www.yha.org.uk on per day basis for 14 days max. i am sure in the mean time u will be able to find some accommodation.. u will find no. of people looking for pvt. accomms. yha stands for youth hostel.. its Saint Paul hostel is hardly 500-700 mtrs. from strand campus. so all those who could not find accommodation this is the best place to live initially. and further if u have youth hostel membership u can get good discount...
@Prashant: bhai aapki advice is really helpful.. now i am clear what i am looking forward for.. i fell subjects i've taken are fine.. minor changes if required will do in first week of studies..
@ Liza: regarding laptop i have heard its cheaper in UK. still i will confirm from friends.. otherwise i am planning to carry one with me... i guess its as essential to everyone like food these days.

Aug 13 2008, 01:13 PM@Anisha: I got my offer letter in 10-12 days. Write to the college and ask them to dispatch it faster through courier. Explain to them that you need the letter for the Visa and that they should send it as fast as they can. Don't know if it will work but no harm trying. :)
I still think you have a chance of getting accommodation since you're an international student but look around for alternatives in any case.
@Aditya: Glad I could help. I like the subjects you've chosen. I'd have chosen the same if I didn't have previous work experience in the subjects I've already chosen.
As far as the Bank account is concerned, the college has a list of Banks close to campus and their respective requirements. Check out this link for opening the bank account and the list of banks: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/about/structure/admin/acareg/studentser...
You can't open an account while you're in India because you need to submit hard copy documents to the branch where you open the account. That can only be done once you are in London. However HSBC has something called a Passport account, for which you can apply while you are in India. The account will only become functional once after you carry their confirmation email printout to one of their branches and submit your documents. But it might save you some time in London and your account may become functional faster than normal. More details are at this link:
http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/personal/current-accounts/passport
The HSBC account costs you 6 pounds a month as fee. There probably are other banks which don't charge any monthly fee for maintaining an account with them. There's a lot of info on the KCL website if you have time to go through it. Just check out the link below and a number of your queries will be answered. :)

Aug 13 2008, 01:49 PMThings might have changed since then, but when I first went to London (1999), all major banks had stalls at the Fresher's Fair at the end of orientation week. They all wanted the new students to be customers, so they gave you free CD walkmen or a 30 Pound deposit on your new (fee free!) account as a reward for banking with them. I still have my bank account with Nat West, but if I were you I'd wait till I get to London before making a decision on the bank account issue.

Aug 13 2008, 03:12 PMHi Cathrin
I think you're right. I'll probably reach London and then decide on which Bank to open an account with.
It doesn't make sense to transfer a huge amount of money to the UK student bank account at 0.1% rate of interest when I can get a 10% rate of interest by keeping my money in India and transferring it as and when required for the tuition fees and living expenses. 10% on approximately 25000 pounds is a lot of money.
The UK banks are actually ripping off the international students because they don't give the normal rate of interest to international students. Maybe there's some law/ regulation which doesn't allow them to pay more than a certain rate of interest to international students but if there is, it seems a little unfair to the international students.
The CD walkman is no longer a good enough incentive though the 30 pounds will cover one and a half nights at the KCl residence. hahaha. :)) I might be tempted if they offer me a new guitar. LOL.
