Aug 12 2008, 10:48 AMBut having expressed my most optimistic views on the subject, I must add that em quite nervous abt the huge loan amout and the mounting interest entailing the LLM! I guess I’ll worry abt it when I get there, no point shitting bricks rite now….

Aug 12 2008, 10:55 AMYippieh! I just got an email from the accommodation office saying that I got a place on Hampstead Campus! Movie stars, here I come! ;)
For the people still looking for accommodation: I found www.gumtree.co.uk, in addition to the University of London Housing website, very helpful. If you need to stay in a youth hostel while looking for a room, I have stayed in the YHA Hostel in St. Paul's before, and it was very reasonably priced and nice as well as central.
Regarding courses in litigation and arbitration: I disagree that they are not worth taking. I think if that's what you want to do later (like me), it pays of to be up to date with procedural rules and to be practised in verbal arguments etc., which is what you do in these classes...

Hey Cathrin, I kinda agree with u on the lit and arbitration courses, plus they sound really interesting too. I think I’ll just go for the commercial arbitration one. So wat subjects do u plan to take?

Aug 12 2008, 08:03 PM@Anisha: You can always get a job if you're good enough and you also don't need a LLM for getting a job if you're good enough. :) But the question is what you intend to do after the LLM and where you want the job. If you want to work in UK after the LLM then be prepared for the worst. But if you wanna come back to India after the LLM, you'll get a job for sure but you need to consider whether it's worth taking a huge loan for the LLM and whether the job you get in India will cover your loan EMI.
I do agree that the LLM will always be useful and what you gain from it will go a long way in the future. If you're doing it from that perspective it's great. If you're doing it from just the perspective of getting a well paying job, then think carefully about the huge loan.
Despite what the guy from Warwick says, the fact remains that the LLM is not an added advantage for a job in UK especially when you're being considered for the same jobs which the LL.B graduates are being considered for and you're an international student. If you take feedback from the recruitment heads of the law firms in UK and recruitment consultants (which I did) it's very negative regarding jobs in UK after the LLM especially for Indian students.
As far as the job scene in India is considered after the LLM, I'm sure the LLM will open a lot of doors for you, which may have been closed earlier after your LL.B degree. You probably stand a good chance of being called for an interview with the big law firms in India after the LLM. Law firms in India, which may not have considered you after your LL.B, will probably be interested in interviewing you after the LLM. But Partners at various Indian law firms have told me that the LLM does not add that much value in the Indian scenario. Therefore don't expect a drastic salary increase in India after doing the LL.B especially if you don't have previous work experience in India.
My suggestion is if you're taking a huge loan, don't take the best case scenario but take the worst case scenario. If with the worst case scenario, you are confident that you will be able to service your loan in India then go for the LLM. I'm also taking a huge loan for the LLM but I know for sure that if I come back to India I can always get a job of 15-20 lakhs a year even in a worst case scenario. So I'm not that worried about paying off the loan. Yea. :)))))
I don't know whether the LLM will make you hard working and disciplined but with a loan over your head you better ensure it does. Hahaha. :))))))))))))
@Aditya and Cathrin: Congrats on your accommodation.
Aditya I'm planning to reach on September 9 in time for the orientation provided I get my Visa in time. So hope to see you there. I've already asked Wolfson House to prepone my moving in date from September 13 to September 9. They've given me a 4 day guest rate between 9th and 13th @22 pounds per day.
Cheers

Aug 13 2008, 05:58 AMHi Liza
I am bringing a laptop with me to London. I've got an Apple Macbook, which I love. :) But I don't know whether I'll use it in class or not. It will depend on the lecturers and what their method of teaching will be. If it's required in class I'll bring it to college but would prefer not to.

Aug 13 2008, 08:33 AMHey ya i plan to buy a lap top too! my dad wants me to go in for a low end one which is sufficient for a student :( Is is true that it would be cheaper to buy one in London?
Prashant, I've decided to go now so em just bracing myself for the worst, lets see wat happens! U r kinda scaring me u know? ;)
Btw guys would u know if there r any days on which King's will pick us up from the airport? Like Queen Mary has pick up for international students on the13th and 14th...anything like that at King's? Any idea anyone?
