UCL LLM planning

Apr 20 2010, 02:07 PMHi Crew,
It seems a few of us are set to commence the UCL LLM in September this year. No doubt we are all at various stages of searching for accommodation, organising scholarships etc. Perhaps we can use this post to share our ideas, tips etc on getting organised for this experience of a lifetime!
I will start - accommodation: Is the general view to secure private accommodation or boarding in the residential halls?

Apr 20 2010, 02:41 PMHi Stuart,
I shall probably be seeking private accomodation, as encouraged by: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/accommodation/appl... considering that I'm an EU national. However, had I not been an EU national, most probably I would have gone for a residential hall!
I bet we do need such places where we get to share our ideas etc... I've been following something similar on: http://www.llm-guide.com/board/79029/4 - but the discussion is mainly focused on the application process, rather than the things you've mentioned.

Apr 20 2010, 06:29 PMHi. I’m from Brazil and am also going to UCL in September. On the accommodation thing, I’ve applied to UCL Residence Halls (couples accommodation, since I’m going with my fiancée – she will be studying the LLM there too). I’m a bit concerned about it though. The acknowledgement receipt my fiancée’s received states we should only hear from UCL Accommodation Office around early-September. That’s certainly raised a red flag for me. I’m probably boarding on 17 September (classes are timetabled to being on 27 September) and I’d like to know where I’m supposed to go once I land in London. Does anyone else who’ve applied heard something different?

Apr 20 2010, 09:50 PMHi Fernando, I am also from Brazil and am attending UCL. I emailed them on the housing situation and they instructed me to inquiry the status on mid August. You might have news from them before September.

Apr 29 2010, 11:54 AMWell there do exist a number of websites, such as:
zoopla.co.uk
http://www.globrix.com/
http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/
However, almost all seem to say that it's too early to start looking, and it would be best to start looking c. 4-6 weeks before.

Apr 29 2010, 12:26 PMseems to me that Bloomsbury is quite expensive...

Apr 30 2010, 01:00 AMI’ve been looking into accommodation too. I’ve been told on the LLM Guide my budget wouldn’t suffice if my plan was to live in the Bloomsbury area, at least not if my fiancée and I wanted a flat or house all for ourselves.
Since I don’t mind sharing a flat, is there anyone out there (especially from São Paulo, SP, Brazil) that would be willing to share a flat or house with a couple? It can be either a single lad or a girl or another couple. I’m focusing my question on people from São Paulo, SP, Brazil, so that we can meet before getting on a plane towards London and you (as well as my fiancée and I) can learn that we’re not (and neither are you) serial killers scouting about for fresh blood! : )
Anyway, sharing a flat or house might not be such a bad idea after all ‘cause from what I’ve seen so far (basically the date base provided by the University of London housing service - http://housing.london.ac.uk), the weekly rent for a flat in the Bloomsbury and surrounding areas would be around 160 per person. All of the rooms include en-suite facilities, so ultimately all that flatmates need to actually share are the kitchen and the living room.[Edited May 27 2010]
