I am interested in hearing about the experience of others with LinkedIn. For me, the world of Internet-based networking is fairly new. Has anyone actually gotten a client though LinkedIn or through any other networking site for that matter?

As far as I know, LinkedIn is not as common here in Europe as it is in the US. For professional networking, most people I know use XING, some use Facebook. All students are in StudiVZ, which is a German facebook clone (some call it "fakebook").

I'm sure you can get clients by using social networks, especially if you participate regularly in expert groups. But I suppose most of those clients are rather in the low-end. I guess companies will still rely on offline contacts; but that may change when the next generation that is "growing up" in social networks starts using them professionally...

Survey Reveals Growth in Online Professional Networking Among Legal Professionals

"The legal profession is traditionally slow to adopt new technologies, so attorneys' readiness to use online networking tools represents a significant shift in behavior.

    - 43 percent of Corporate Counsel and 53 percent of Private Practice Attorneys report that current versions of professional networks and online communities do not help them work more efficiently and cost effectively

    - 54 percent of corporate counsel and 41 percent of private practice attorneys view linking to other attorneys or expanding ones' network as the most important"

Here are some useful tips about how professional networks should be used by lawyers:

my experience with linkedin is only to the extent of having known about various people before meeting them. I still have to test out the usefulness of the site for finding jobs in US.

Since I asked the question, I suppose I should share my experiences to date. My foray into internet-based networking began with LinkedIn. Initially, it was little more than a way for me to re-connect with people. Now, it has begun to evolve into a network of what I hope will be referral sources. While I am still waiting on my first engagement from LinkedIn, I can report that I have been contacted several times regarding representation and continue to remain hopeful that an actual engagement will be the end result of one of these contacts.

I have also expanded the scope of my efforts to include other on-line networking sites such as ecademy and viadeo. Again, I've gotten a few inquiries, but nothing solid yet. I am continuing to evaluate whether internet-based networking is a viable business development tool.

As per my view linkedin is a source to exchange the views with collegue for current court orders or
judgments regarding your quaries and the quetion related to the clientage , i think that its depends on
your crediblity, competency and fairness with your clients. v.k.singh advocate

So how exactly do you use Linkedin? Are your participating in Linkedin groups (like LegalRow) a lot? I didn't find that too useful. The funny thing is that most activity over there is initiated by the same people you find on other legal networks like this one.

    Peter:

You are right that many parts of LinkedIn are frustrating. However, at least one lawyer group to which I belong there is beginning to get some traction. Frankly, its difficult to know which internet-based networking group deserves an effort. Many show promise, but I suspect only a few will bear fruit.
