Great so many joined the group already! I have set up another group for NUS at https://www.lawyrs.net/groups/42/nus-llm-2009 so we can also discuss problems like housing etc. with students who are admitted to the general NUS program.

Hey guys. Hafiz, I also got a scholarship, but I'm still applying for other independent scholarships like these two: http://www.independent.org/students/essay/ http://www.sevenfund.org/contests-competitions.html
For me, moving to Singapore means a huge cultural shock. I live in NYC suburbs but I'm Venezuelan and East Asia is precisely on the other side of the planet. I've been reading daily about it, there's a web site I really enjoy: http://www.myapplemenu.com/singapore/
If you have interesting information about what it's like in Singapore (politics, lifestyle, culture, anything) please post it here.

Hi everyone, saying hi and also looking forward to meeting everyone. Singapore is a typical commercial hub, quite multicultural, but political discussions may have to wait till we all meet in person!

    Hello everyone!
Talking of political discussions... i heard freedom of expression is restricted in Singapore. Newspapers mostly tell only what the government wants you to know. Any clues on how true, or otherwise, that is?

    See you all soon!

I understand that dissident opinions in Singapore are very restricted. For instance, political videos are banned, in 2005 a minister stated that "Political videos, by their very nature, will be political, will be biased and, therefore, will not be able to allow the listener or the viewer to see a whole range of arguments." Today, I read in the news that the "PAP rejects the Fourth Estate role of the press as conceived by liberal-democratic minds. The government alone has the obligation and the right to shape the national agenda. "
Public protests are also banned. In November of last year some NUS exchange students decided to conduct a protest in Singapore against the Burmese government. Pia Muzaffar Dawson and Olly Laughland (two of the students) claimed that they were "intimidated and harassed in the most disgraceful manner" by the authorities. There were 9 protestors (divided in 3 groups of 3), 29 journalists and 2,500 police officers. Just a little intimidating.
