Jan 09 2008, 03:19 PMKaran: I did a research on the job opportunities once your advance degree studies are over and they are not limited to the top 3 law schools, for example if you check Cleary Gottlieb´s web page www.cgsh.com they have a big international lawyers base with different academic backgrounds, also you should consider the prestige that GT has worldwide I would reconsider your decision. Anyways it´s just a friendly advice.

Jan 09 2008, 08:11 PMhey,
i have never worked for a law firm (currently doing my PhD), but are there law firms that pay for LLM programs? Similar to MBAs that are being paid for by your current or future employers??
i'm basically in various LLM groups to gather more information before i apply....would like to go to the US but the costs are a big factor to think about for me too....

Jan 10 2008, 01:05 AMHi everyone. Georgetown has a great law school. It might not be the best one, but anyway it offers good possibilities, mainly because it makes huge efforts to help locate their graduates. I was admitted in the early program to the school, and reading the info Georgetown has sent I believe it won`t be impossible or very hard to find a good job, as long as I do the necessary networking, and have good recommendations from former employers or professors.
Secondly, I am not sure that Karan`s statement is true. At the moment I have three close friends that work or have worked in important law firms in New York, such as Sidley Austin. Two of them nowadays are earning 13.000US a month, and other that works in JP Morgan in Tax issues wins about 10.000US a month. She finalized her LLM in May 2007. Is that bad at all?
I believe the point is: Are you in the top or in the bottom of the lawyers or LLM graduates that search for job in the US? How strong are your networking abilities? Is the ranking of the school the only thing that counts, or is it more important your personal charisma, strength and intelligence to open doors and oportunities?
Of course, I have not had this experience yet, so I may be wrong. It would be useful to have LLM graduates opinion of Georgetown about this topic.

Jan 13 2008, 11:25 AM>Tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year was $39,390 per year
Karan, of course you are right, I did not cite the website properly. You wouldn't get any LLM from a top US law school for less than 20,000 bucks ;-)
Georgetown is a great name in my country. It may be true that in order to work in the US you should seek admission to schools like Harvard, Columbia or NYU. If you plan to work at a law firm in your own country after the LLM (like most of us, I guess), there is not that much difference between NYU and Georgetown, depending on the opinions in you country. Harvard, Yale and Stanford are of course a league on their own, but for me that was not a realistic option anyway...

I also received an admission offer letter on Dec 3, but waiting for other Unis... I am also in the same boat with Mr. Karen considering my financial factors and may not be able to attend GULC... About getting Job, it is true that most of the Tax LLM of GULC got jobs but the same is not true for other LL.M.....
