A computer system consists of two types of components, hardware and
software. The hardware consists of the physical components of the system
and the software consists of the programming instructions. The commercial
importance of computer technology arises from the rapid growth of the
computer industry. Computer industry has recently been a significant element
in modern societies. And this situation, have raised fundamental questions
about how computer market should be regulated.
Since legal protection of computer programs become a fundemental problem
in modern life, European Communities has considered the explicit need for a
legislative guidance. In order to protect computer software there are two
forms of intellectual property rights: patent law and copyright law. This study
aims to examine the development of protection for computer programs and
especially, analyses copyright protection in this sense. The legal protection of
computer programs in the view of Turkish Copyrigths Act originates from the
EC Directive on Legal Protection of Computer Programs.
