Managing employment costs in Latvia during economic crisis

Most companies are now in the process of cost cutting and many have already discovered that
employment costs represent an important part of the total expenditure. At the same time we have seen
employment disputes boom. The reason for such disputes could be insufficient knowledge of employers regarding the possibilities of minimising employment costs without simultaneously breaching employment laws.
The article provides an overview of some alternatives to reduction in the number of employees, such as, for example, reduction of salaries, working time and other alternatives. Furthermore, the basic rules under Latvian laws regarding dismissal of employees are reviewed.
