  Syna, I think you should go ahead with the application. I sent in my application on the last day (1st December) and guess what, I got in!
  
  About tips; two factors are very crucial to your success. The first is a VERY STRONG ESSAY, and the other, TWO VERY STRONG recommendations (at least). Now you need to get recommenders who would spend time to go the extra mile in highlighting your strengths and packaging you as a very brilliant and hardworking student! I will advise that you get a Harvard alumnus, at least, as one of your recommenders but dont worry if you are unable to. Finally, you need to PRAY! I think these are what did the trick for me.
