Mar 22 2010, 05:00 PMThis course is a must for anyone wishing to either embark on or build up on a career in corporate finance. I have recently completed this LLM and it has fulfilled my expectations in that it has offered me both the theoretical as well as practical knowledge needed to start my career in financial law.
One of the unique aspects of this LLM is that most of the lecturers are also highly regarded practitioners in their field. This has enriched my learning experience no ends, providing me with insight into what really happens behind those tightly shut investment banks and law firms.
The course itself is structured so that most of the assessment is through written assignments, which are handed out at the beginning of each term. The questions are crafted so that they require a deep understanding of the aspect of the law in question, as well as the application of those laws. For example, I had to write an analysis of an Asset-Backed Security (ABS) prospectus for one of my core modules, and I had to not only acquire an extensive knowledge of the regulations behind the offering of ABS, but I also had to focus on one particular prospectus during my analysis. By the end of the term, I knew the prospectus like the back of my hand, and am now confident of being able to work with a team of lawyers drafting one of those prospectuses.
Another feature of this LLM which I appreciated was its emphasis on networking. Building a network of contacts is essential in building a career in this area, and I was afforded both the opportunity and the support necessary to meet people. For example, we had residential weekend seminars which were attended by experts, as well as some of the alumni of the LLM Corporate Finance Law class. The course director, Dr Joseph Tanega, also organised other seminars during the semester, whereby practitioners such as lawyers specialising in OTC derivatives contracts, and high-ranked employees of credit rating agencies participated. Those events were always followed by some socialising, which allowed me to make interesting contacts.
One of the other aspects of the course which I am grateful for, is the opportunity to choose from elective modules form all the other LLM courses at the University of Westminster. This is a huge advantage for students who know exactly in which field they want to specialise in, as it offers us the chance to obtain a tailor-made LLM, so to speak.
All in all, I would say that this course has given me the tools necessary to build my career. It was indeed very strenuous at times, but when I look back on this intense year, I am glad I chose this LLM.
