4 Interesting Laws You Should Know About

Jul 26 2019, 06:16 AMMost people live their lives trying hard to be law-abiding citizens, by respecting the rules and regulations of the country that they live in. But even though most of us think that we are obeying the law and doing the right thing, there are a few laws in existence that many people do not know about. And while some of these laws make sense when it comes to how society is run, others are a bit more obscure, which stops the everyday person from knowing about them.
1. Smoking as a minor
In Australia, the legal age for someone to be able to purchase tobacco cigarettes is 18 years old. However, in some states, minors are legally allowed to consume cigarettes. Adults that supply minors with cigarettes can be fined for the offense of selling or giving a minor the substance, but in some states, there are no laws against letting minors smoke cigarettes in public. There are also laws against smoking in a vehicle in the presence of someone under the age of 16, so if you are smoking in the car in the presence of a minor, you could be fined for that as well.
2. Drinking in public
Although Australians are known for being big drinkers all over the world, it might surprise many people to find that there are laws against public intoxication in Australia. If the police think that you are drunk in a public place, you can be arrested and be held in custody until you are sober again. These laws were made to prevent people from becoming a nuisance or hurting others whilst drunk, because when you are intoxicated, you do not have control of your inhibitions like you do normally. If you are deemed to be upsetting others around you, you can also be charged with breaching the peace, as well as drunk and disorderly. This can lead to a large fine or charges against you, so if you think you have had too much, it is always best to stop drinking when you are out and about. So essentially, if you are out and a bar and the proprietors think that you are drunk, you can be arrested and reprimanded if you are causing problems.
3. Crossing the street
Most of us know the rules in Australia when we are driving on the road in our cars, but there are also laws in place for pedestrians when they are using the road to cross the street. For example, it is illegal to cross the street diagonally, unless you are at an intersection that permits it. This is because you should be taking the most direct route to get a cross a road when you are crossing it, so that you don’t get in the way of any vehicles in the area. Another law that pedestrians should be concerned about is that pedestrians must cross at a crossing on the road if they are within 20 metres of one nearby. These laws are very important for pedestrians to observe, because they are put in place to keep everyone that uses the road safe, so that no unnecessary accidents occur.
4. Speaking offensively
If you are someone that uses bad language in public on a regular basis, you need to start being a bit more careful, because you could be could be fined or arrested by the police for speaking rudely. Most of us think that we can say what we think whenever we feel like it, but it is actually illegal to speak offensively in a public place, especially if it is deemed upsetting or abusive to the people you are speaking to. If you are accused of this crime, you may need to speak to a criminal lawyer, like the professionals at LY Lawyers, who specialise in practicing criminal law. Being charged with speaking offensively in public can cost you up to $660 in fines, but if it is not coupled with any other offences, you will not receive a conviction or a criminal record. So in order to avoid any problems, when you are out and about, be mindful of the way you speak to others.
There are some very interesting laws that are still in place in Australia. Many of these laws have risen out of strange circumstances, and were relevant at the time, but may seem strange to us now because times have changed. Today lawmakers are revising many of the laws that we think are obsolete or are ineffective, but it can be hard to make revisions to everything at once. And although some of these laws may still be active today, they may not be enforced to the full because of how we live our lives differently today.[Edited Jul 26 2019]
